I wonder what controls all these processes
Mostly in this case, a certain type of proteins called « neurotrophins » which come in all shapes and forms, but also from chemo-attractants (proteins that attract the neurone). They are produced by the neuron’s target and environment (for example, a specific muscle) and through a specific receptor on the growth cone membrane, the neurone is able to grow towards it and reach its target!
And as for the rapid growth, it’s due to actine microfilaments in the neuron’s growth cone which can polymerise and depolymerise (growth and retract) extremely quickly due to all sorts of molecular factors (the neurotrophins I mentioned for example)
